For Florida teens, taking the Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course is the first step in the licensing process. Teens ages 15 to 17 need to pass this six-hour course to gain their learner's permit and begin behind-the-wheel practice.

The DETS Course

Our online DETS course covers drug and alcohol use in relation to vehicle operation, defensive driving techniques, basic vehicle controls and more. The course is also approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), making it easy to meet state requirements.

We break the material into five modules with engaging sections that include animations and videos. This user-friendly format helps guide students through the material with ease. Note: Previously, the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course was required for first-time drivers under the age of 18. Now, the FLHSMV uses the DETS course to fulfill that requirement. TLSAE is now only required for drivers 18 and older.
