To get your first learner permit in Florida, you'll need to complete a few state-required steps. Teens ages 15 to 17 must complete a mandatory driver's education course called Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS). New drivers 18 and up must complete the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course instead.
If you're looking for a driver education program that offers ease, convenience, quality and value, we have you covered. The Driver Education Traffic Safety course, or DETS, is mandatory for Florida teens ages 15 to 17 applying for a learner's permit. We also offer the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, which is required for first-time drivers 18 and older.
Our courses are fully state-approved, easy to follow and designed to keep new drivers engaged. You'll get everything you need to meet state requirements for new drivers.
If you're preparing to get your first license, especially as a teen, you must complete a few important steps in line with state laws and driver education requirements. Here's what you need to do to pass and earn your learner license on time:
To pass your exam the first time, take advantage of online education tools, study guides and practice questions that align with your state's curriculum.
By completing each step carefully and on schedule, you'll be on your way to earning a learner license that gives you the freedom to drive with safety, confidence and full knowledge of the laws that keep everyone protected on the road.
Let's say you're 14 ½ years old and ready to get started. The first step is to satisfy your education requirement with Driver Education Traffic Safety. Our online DETS program will introduce you to traffic signs and signals, state motor vehicle laws, defensive driving strategies, the responsibilities of having a license and more.
When you complete the curriculum, you can start reviewing the state driver manual and studying for your written exam. When you turn 15, you can take your learner license exam 100% online!
The exam includes 50 multiple-choice questions on state traffic laws and traffic signs and signals. We have plenty of resources to help you pass the first time, including a prep course and online practice test.
Once you pass the exam, you can visit a local FLHSMV service center. The final steps are to provide all required documents, complete vision and hearing testing and pay the licensing fee. After meeting all requirements and completing the steps above, you will be eligible to get your learner license.
The process is similar, but there are some key differences. If you're 18 or older, you don't need to take Driver Education Traffic Safety. Instead, you need to pass Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE).
You won't need a Parental Consent Form, but you have to provide the same required documentation to prove your identity and residency. You must pass the Class E Knowledge exam, but the state requires applicants 18 and up to take it in person at a FLHSMV location.
You also need to satisfy the additional requirement of taking the Class E Driving Skills Exam, which is a behind-the-wheel assessment. Finally, you must pass a vision and hearing exam and pay the licensing fee.
