Impact Courses

Mandatory Training Provided by the Texas DPS

Everyone seeking their first Texas driver's license must complete a free DPS Impact course. These courses were developed with the goal of saving lives through awareness and education. The program is meant to reduce the risk of being involved in automobile crashes, particularly those caused by distracted driving, which has become the number one killer of drivers in America. These Impact courses show what can happen when drivers are distracted while driving. Proof of completion of your Impact course must be provided when you apply for your license at the DPS.

When should I take my Impact course?

The ITTD program should be viewed after completion of Behind-the-Wheel driver education requirements and prior to taking the skills examination. The proof of completion must be provided to the DPS no later than ninety (90) days after program completion. All skills examination applicants who completed a Teen Driver Education program must complete the ITTD program and obtain proof of completion prior to taking the driving skills examination.

The Impact program is divided into 2 categories based on age:

Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) for ages 16–17

The Impact Texas Teen Drivers program is a free, 2-hour informational video that shares the dangers of distracted driving along with real life stories of teens that have lost their lives. This course is for teens 16-17 years of age who have completed a driver education course (such as our Parent-Taught course or our Self-Taught course).

Find more information on the ITTD program at the DPS website.

Impact Texas Young Drivers (ITYD) for ages 18+

The Impact Texas Young Drivers program is a free, 1-hour informational video that provides educational information on the dangers of distracted driving. The video also shares real life stories of people and their families who lost loved ones through distracted driving. This course is for students 18 and up who have completed an Adult Driver Education course, or have completed a teen driver ed course, such as our Parent-Taught course or our Self-Taught course.

For students 25 and up, driver education is not required, but it is highly recommended. However, the Impact course is mandatory, even for those who have not chosen to take an optional driver ed course. All drivers 25+ must take the Impact Texas Young Drivers course.
