How do I know I need to take this course?
Before applying for a restricted driver's license (learner's permit) in the state of Florida, you must complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course if you have never had a driver's license.
Is this course authorized to get my learner's permit?
YES. The course and exam are authorized by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV or DMV) to meet the requirements needed for your first Florida learner's permit.
Can I just take the permit test?
Yes. We allow you to complete the permit test by itself to meet your DHSMV learner’s permit exam requirement. Visit the permit exam page to register.
What is the drug and alcohol course?
The course is commonly referred to as the DATA course, drug and alcohol course, first time driver course, or permit course. All of these describe the course but the official name by the Florida DHSMV is the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course.
How do I complete my written exam?
We offer the DMV written exam online. You also have the option of completing the permit and license exam prep, which will help you pass the exam and prepare for your license.
How long is the course?
The TLSAE course is a total of 4 hours.
What is the permit prep?
The permit and license prep is a resource of materials that will help you get your first time driver license. You can use the prep to prepare for your online exam, written exam or any other DMV test required to get your license.
What happens after I complete the course?
Your information will automatically be reported to the DMV. You will receive a copy of your completion certificate for your own records but you do not need to bring this with you to the DMV.
What documents do I need to take to the DMV?
- If you are under the age of 18, you need a parental consent form which must be signed in the presence of a driver license examiner, or notarized prior if a parent or guardian will not be present. Visit http://www.flhsmv.gov/html/forms.html to access this form.

Do I need anything else to get my permit?
If you've successfully completed the course and the exam, schedule your appointment (we give you this option with the permit prep), and bring the appropriate documents to the DMV. That's all you need!
